In April 2021, the French carmaker Citroen launched the much awaited C5 Aircross in India, with local assembly in Tamil Nadu the C5 Aircross is the first being offered by the brand in India and place big bets on it. After Peugeot left India in 1997, this is the first time PSA Group is re-entering India. Available in 2 variants – Feel ₹29.90lakhs and Shine ₹31.90lakhs ex-showroom Delhi. Competing against some of the iconic cars in this segment like the Hyundai Tucson and Volkswagen Tiguan, let us see what Citroen has to offer to the Indian market.
The Citroen C5 Aircross comes with only 1 engine, it’s the Diesel 2L DW10FC which produces 174.33bhp of power and 400nm of torque, combined with 8 speed automatic gearbox proving to be a great performing engine, still one misses an AWD option in the C5 Aircross which turns an ordinary car to SUV. Macpherson Strut front suspension with double progressive hydraulic cushions and for rear suspension the C5 has twist beam axle with single progressive hydraulic cushions.
The exterior of the C5 Aircross is more of a crossover in a size of SUV, with black cladding all over the lower body and big bold parts making the car massive and robust. 4.5m long, 2.1m wide, 1.71m high and 2.73m of wheelbase, 18inch diamond cut alloy wheels available in 4 different designs. Both the variants have dual tone options along with 4 color choices – Perla Nera Black, Cumulus Gray, Tijuca Blue and Pearl white. There is abundance of shapes used to make design funkier, front profile has split headlights with sleek grille, chrome strip in the bonnet lip which beautifully forms the Citroen logo. Chrome strip is also present on the sides covering the big windows and end in a “C” shape. 4 rectangle shaped distinctive tail lights along with dual exhaust pipes form the back profile, roof rails is a good attachment but will only work in the Feel variant which comes without panoramic sunroof.
Mix of multiple materials is used in the interior, with both soft touch and hard parts, piano black over the infotainment screen and air vents as well as chrome is used over door handles. The doors have multi layers and textures which adds to the French identity of the brand. Big storage spaces in center armrest and dashboard, even the doors have big pockets to fit large bottles making Indian customers happy. The seats have grey color theme with great comfort and good seating position in the front as well as the rear seats, with almost flat floor, 3 passengers can sit easily. The 2nd row seats have three independent seat which can be adjusted for leg support and a recline function to recline, but this sacrificed the rear seat armrest for the passengers. The C5 Aircross has been designed as right hand drive for India but only the steering column has been shifted, the gear selector and e-brake still as per the left hand drive system which is a small quirk in the urban SUV. Adding to the interior elements are double laminated front windows and acoustic windshield for minimum noise.
Citroen has made only 2 additions to make the variants different from each other, Shine variant has a panoramic sunroof and LED projector lights and the Feel variant has halogen lights. 8-inch infotainment screen with Android Auto and Apple Carplay, along with 6 speaker system for good acoustics. Just below the infotainment screen, there are touch sensitive buttons to operate the 2 zone climate control. 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster which has some quirks which are good enough to confuse anybody, 3D animations and an old school radio frequency style speedometer. Absence of premium features like ventilated seats, wireless phone charging and connected car features can be a big point of concern for buyers as rivals are offering these features at lower price point.
For safety, the French car has all its features standard in both variants. 6 airbags, electronic stability control, front and rear parking sensors, ABS & EBD. C5 Aircross also has park assist feature which helps the driver to park in both bay and parallel parking. Apart from all the common features offered in cars at this price, the C5 has a unique feature called the Coffee break alert which also adds to the quirkiness of the car, in this the car gives an alert noise to the driver when driving for past 2 hours at a speed of 65km/h or more.
