MG to take charge: As British as it can get…

It is finally unveiled that the British automotive company MG (Morris Garages) will start its production in India this year. MG Motor is a UK-based carmaker that has a rich heritage and is known in India for its iconic vintage cars. It first came into existence in the 1920s and managed to create a cult following for its sports cars. The main USP is that MG are gonna manufacture the cars in India itself and don't forget, which means the import charges are waived off, which leads to a much cheaper car. For example, the Jeep Compass is manufactured in India making it so much more affordable as a result you can see the sales of it. The arrival of MG has made the others a bit worried as MG is not only bringing in new face but also the first connected SUV in its segment, which will not only attract customer but it takes the game to a different level, giving the customers a more advanced car. For those who are new to the term “Connected” in automotive terms, it means a car that is equipped with Internet access, and usually also with a wireless local area network. This allows the car to share internet access, and hence data, with other devices both inside as well as outside the vehicle.

Their initial kick-off will be with the MG Hector which will be the first connected SUV as mentioned earlier, which means the car can be connected with other devices in order to receive commands, such that it makes the journey of the owner immensely pleasurable. For example you can sit at home and turn on/off the Air-conditioner and you can set the seat position as well as which song you want it to play when you enter the car. Your presence is no more needed for all this as technology is running faster than anything.

Being connected does not mean it can do whatever you want, there will be several restrictions to it, and it is not all that simple as it seems. People without smartphone would not be able to use it and yes you would not a good speed internet access with it. Talking of internet access not only your phone requires internet but also you will have to set up a LAN to your car for this to work, it’s not that simple after all.

This new SUV, given its positioning in the market, is expected to get leather upholstery, electric front seats, six airbags, five-seat and seven-seat options as well as a massive touchscreen infotainment system and 360 degree surround view camera. The car will be offered with both petrol and diesel engine options and also both MT and AT options. We also know that it will be offered with both petrol and diesel power and in the case of the engine, the internet is that this engine will be a Fiat sourced 2.0-litre four-cylinder unit. MG Hector will be the first product from the company to be introduced in 2019. The Hector competes against the likes of Hyundai Tucson, Jeep Compass and the Tata Harrier. It will be built at MG’s new plant in Halol, Gujarat.

MG in later next year will also bring in a new SUV called the eZS which will be fully electric, it is believed that the vehicle will be powered by a single electric motor that generates 148bhp and 350Nm to the front wheels. The electric range is expected to be around 400kilometres under the NEDC cycle with the facility of fast-charging. Other information about the car is not yet disclosed but will get a better look at it end of this year.

MG is a new brand for the Indian market, it will be interesting to see how the Indian customers react to it’s cars and if it can out sell the competitors. By the look of it, it has all the capabilities of doing so and if it is priced attractively then by all means it can be a game changer.
