The Czech automobile brand Skoda, launched the 4th generation of the Octavia in an online event held on June 10th of this year. Launched internationally in 1996, the Octavia made a debut in India in 2001 and 2nd generation Octavia called the Laura launched in 2006. With significant amount of technological and design development Octavia is back with a bang. Available in 2 variants Style (base variant) and Laurin & Klement or L&T for short, the expected price for the Octavia is between ₹25lakhs to ₹30lakhs ex-showroom Delhi. Only 1 engine is offered which is a 2L TSI Petrol engine producing 187bhp power and 320nm of torque, combined with a 7-speed DSG gearbox it results in a fuel efficiency of 15.81km/l. Skoda has still not confirmed about any Diesel engine in the pipeline, they are still thinking on the same.
Big changes in the exterior and interior design elements increases the sportiness and a premium aspects of the car. Aggressive design and sharp lines on the bonnet focuses on the front chrome framed butterfly grill. 5 color choices - Brilliant silver, Lava Blue, Magic Black, Candy White and Maple Brown with no dual tone roof. 17-inch alloy wheels comes as standard but both variants get a different design. 4.69m long, 1.83m wide and 1.47m high, a wheelbase of 2.68m gives ample amount of legroom and large boot space of 600L and 1550L when seats folded. 2 passengers can sit comfortably in the rear seat instead of 3 due to elevated floor and rear AC vents. Big Skoda badging on the boot lid and Laurin & Klement badging on the right front shoulder of the L&T as an attention to detail adds to the luxury. Soft touch materials on the dashboard, white seats and touch sensitive interior lights makes the cabin no less than any other German luxury car, but one still misses the sunroof as the Octavia does not offer that in both variants.
The features list in the Octavia is loaded but there are few add-ons in the L&T variant to differentiate the two. Dual zone climate control, All LED lights, 10-inch infotainment screen, 2 spoke steering wheel, Ambient lighting, puddle lamps, front and rear parking sensors with rear camera, hill start assist and Keyless entry are some of the standard features being offered. As an add-on, the L&T variant gets adaptive LED, fatigue alert, 8 airbags in comparison of 6 being offered in the style variant and hands free parking. For the infotainment system the L&T variant offers Canton’s 11 speaker system in comparison with 8 Skoda’s own speakers in the style variant. Front electrically adjustable seats only in the L&T variant and the style variant only gets driver seat electrically adjustable which is a big negative point considering the price point of the car.
Comparing it with its rival the Hyundai Elantra one can put more weight into the absence of sunroof and both front electrically adjustable seats. As complete package of aggressive looks, premium interior and a good performing engine, the new Skoda Octavia is a good choice and it is recommended to go for the L&T variant.
